My daughter's common-law husband bought out her share of their house when they separated. Does she answer yes when asked if she sold her principal residence?

If she sold out her share (presumably 50%) of her principal residence during 2017, then she should answer yes to the question and she should provide the details regarding the amount that she received on the sale of her 50% share of the residence as well as the year when she acquired her interest in the residence.
