How do I claim vehicle expenses if I'm self-employed?
If you used your vehicle to earn self-employment income, then you're eligible to claim vehicle expenses.
You can't claim the total amount of your vehicle expenses, but you can deduct the percentage that relates to your business activities.
- Answer the initial Personal info interview questions if you haven't already. This unlocks the Tax home screen.
- From the Tax home screen, under Add to your return, enter self and select Self-Employment Activities.
- On the Your Self-Employment or Business Summary screen, select Enter New Business.
- Continue through the EasyStep interview, continuing past the info screen and past the [your business] income summary screen, until you arrive at the Next up, claiming your expenses screen.
- On the Select the types of expenses you have screen, under Vehicle expenses, select Add, then Continue.
- Select Start under Vehicle expenses.
- Answer Yes to Did you use a vehicle for your work?
- Select Add a new vehicle.
- Answer the questions and enter info about your vehicle.
- You can review your vehicle expenses on the Vehicle expenses summary screen.
- Answer all the initial interview questions if you haven't already.
- Select Find, enter Business in the search box, select Business profile, then select Go.
- On the Your self-employment profile for 2024screen, select your work category, then Continue.
- Continue until you reach the T2125 Vehicle Expenses screen, and select Yes.
- Answer the questions and enter info about your vehicle.
- Once you arrive at the T2125 Business Summary screen, your total amount for Vehicle expense is listed.
