How do I claim the Manitoba Teaching Expense Tax Credit?

SOLVEDby TurboTax3Updated December 21, 2023

Beginning in 2021, Manitoba teachers can claim up to $1,000 in out-of-pocket teaching expenses through a refundable tax credit, resulting in a refund of up to $150. Eligibility for this new provincial credit is the same as the federal Eligible Educator School Supply Tax Credit.

Expenses that have been reimbursed or claimed elsewhere can't be claimed on your return. While you don’t need to submit any receipts, keep them on hand in case the CRA asks for supporting documentation.

For more information, visit the CRA’s Manitoba Information Guide.

You may be eligible if:

  • You lived in Manitoba at the end of the tax year, and
  • You were a teacher or early childhood educator (ECE) at an elementary school, secondary school, or regulated child care facility, and
  • You held a valid teaching or ECE certificate, license, permit, or diploma

Eligible expenses include:

  • Books, games, and puzzles
  • Containers, such as plastic boxes
  • Educational support software

These expenses must have been bought for you to teach or facilitate student learning, and used in the school or facility where you work.
