Can one switch from having used online last year to using desktop this year and carry forward the information? Is it true desktop allows to add comments for CRA?

Importing your data
Yes, you can switch, but the transition from Online to Desktop isn't as seamless as staying within one platform.
Technically, TurboTax Canada Desktop looks for a specific file format (.tt24) to carry forward data. TurboTax Online usually doesn't give you this file easily—it prefers to keep you in the cloud.
You can't just "import" your 2024 Online (previous year) return into the 2025 Desktop by logging in.
When you file electronically (NETFILE), the CRA receives a data string of numbers and codes. There is no field for general text comments in a standard T1 return. You can add "Notes" or "Memos" for your own records within the software, but these do not get transmitted to the CRA.
