Investors and rental owners
As per the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Royalties may also be income from investments or from a business. Your income from royalties may be shown in box 17 of a T5 slip.
If your royalties are from a work or invention and there are no associated expenses, report the income on line 10400 of your return. If there were associated expenses, report the income on line 13500 of your return. Report all other royalties on line 12100 of your return.
To enter this information in TurboTax online, follow these steps:
- Log in to your TurboTax account and select "View all tax return". Select the tax return you want to work on.
- On the top-left corner, click on "Find".
- Now search for "Foreign Income" and select the result.
- On the "Foreign income" screen, put your information that matches your category. You can use "Other Foreign Income" if it doesn't match any of the other categories.
