Are you using the Desktop version of TurboTax? If so, you will need a backup file or data file in the .tt24 format, as a PDF file cannot be uploaded into the software.
If you are using the Online version, please note that you cannot upload any files for the current year. Instead, you can import the previous year's return into the current year by using the same login credentials that your friend used.
To clarify, you cannot directly upload a standard PDF of a completed tax return into your new TurboTax account for automatic data population. A PDF is an end-user document, not a data file.
If obtaining the original data file is not possible, you will need to manually enter the information from the PDF into your current-year TurboTax return. The PDF contains all the necessary figures and information (such as names, addresses, and income from T-Slips) that you can use as a reference.
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
