After you file

Your marital status can affect your taxes and any benefit and credit payments for which you’re eligible. Let the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) know about your new marital status by the end of the following month after the status change. Some exceptions apply:

  1. If you’ve separated, let 90 consecutive days pass before notifying the CRA.
  2. If you’ve become widowed, provide the CRA with the deceased's date of death as soon as possible.

For more information, please see this TurboTax FAQ: How does a change in marital status affect my tax return?

This Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) web page lists the different ways that you can change your marital status on their files: Update your CRA information: Change your marital status
