Can we claim my husband’s house as his principal residence for 2 yrs, if he lived in it for .5 yr and then my daughter lived in it for 1.5 , before selling it?

No. If the home was your husband's principal residence for only 6 months, then he must report that it was his principal residence for 6 months.
