It would depend on how much you earned with the freelance writing. If the net income, after subtracting expenses, is less than $3500, then you can claim that as casual income. You would report the net, however keep your documentation to show how you arrived at that amount in case CRA wishes to review it. Otherwise, you would report that income as self employed income, and you would show your total revenues and your expenses.
