I have a simple tax return but the program keeps telling me a need to upgrade to a self employed program even though I am not self employed. It will not let me proceed.

I am a retired person with pension income and a small amount of investment income

TurboTax could be telling you that you are self-employed because of the income in certain boxes on slips. For example, if you have any amount in boxes 20 or 48 of a T4A, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) says that income would be self-employment income.
