I have two T4 slips and one Relevé 1 slip from the same employer. Can I combine the amounts from the corresponding boxes on both T4 slips?

Hi,  you should not combine the amounts from the corresponding boxes on your two T4 slips and your Relevé 1 slip, even if they are from the same employer.

Here's why:

  • Separate Reporting: Each T4 slip represents a separate record of your earnings and deductions for a specific period or reason, even if it's from the same employer.1 The employer is required to issue separate slips in certain situations (e.g., if you worked in different provinces or if there was a change in your employment status during the year).
  • Electronic Filing: Tax software like TurboTax is designed to read and process each T4 slip individually. Combining the amounts would prevent the software from correctly identifying the individual slips and the specific information they contain. This could lead to errors in your tax calculation.
  • CRA Matching: The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) receives a copy of each T4 slip directly from your employer. If you combine the amounts, the information you report on your tax return won't match the information the CRA has on file, potentially leading to discrepancies and reviews.
  • Relevé 1 (RL-1): The Relevé 1 slip is specific to income earned in the province of Quebec. It contains information required for your Quebec provincial income tax return. While some of the boxes might correspond to boxes on the T4, they are for different tax jurisdictions and must be reported separately as per Quebec's requirements.

How to enter them in TurboTax:

You will need to enter each T4 slip and your Relevé 1 slip separately into TurboTax. The software will guide you through this process. You will typically have an option to "Add another T4 slip" and "Add a Relevé 1 slip."

In summary, treat each slip as a distinct document and enter the information from each one individually into TurboTax. The software will automatically combine the income and deductions from all your slips to calculate your total taxable income and taxes payable.
