Just wondering if anybody knows how the compensation received for eviction because the building is demolished based on the "Ontario residential tenancy act" is treated for income tax purposes. The compensation is the equivalent of 3 months' rent.
Is the landlord suppose to give any tax slip? Where in the tax return need to be recorded from a tenant perspective?
If it is considered a “windfall” as per the CRA, you are not required to include it on your tax return. But to be completely certain, I would advise you to contact the CRA directly at 1-800-959-8281.
Below I have provided a few links for a better understanding:
Under the Tribunal of Ontario – Landlord & Tenant Board – the tenant is to be given a one-month equivalent.
