I have been paying rent with my girlfriend for the past 8 months. She is the one who directly transfers rent to our landlord. I pay a portion. Can I claim my amount?

Girlfriend is the one technically paying, although I pay a portion to her to contribute to the monthly rental costs. Can I claim this amount under Payments Related to your Principal Residence?

Yes, you can claim your amount. As per the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), in the case of rent payments shared by multiple families or individuals (roommates) living at the same address, even if only one individual was making the payments to the landlord, you would:

  • each apply as separate family units or individuals
  • each enter the portion of the rent that you paid

Thank you for choosing TurboTax Canada.
