Nonbusiness Energy Property Credit

Deducting your new front entrance doors is a matter that is handled elsewhere on your return as you may be able to deduct certain improvements to your property.

As for the eligibility for the Energy Property Credit, the eligibility goes as follows:

  • you were a resident of Ontario on December 31, 2021, and one of the following conditions applies:
    • you will be 18 years of age or older before June 1, 2023
    • you had a spouse or common-law partner on or before December 31, 2021 or
    • you are a parent who lives or previously lived with your child (see question 19) and
  • for 2021, at least one of the following conditions applies to you:
    • rent for your principal residence, which was subject to Ontario municipal or education property tax, was paid by or for you
    • property tax for your principal residence in Ontario was paid by or for you
    • you lived on a reserve in Ontario and home energy costs (for example, electricity, heat) for your principal residence on the reserve were paid by or for you or
    • you lived in a public or non-profit long-term care home in Ontario and an amount for accommodation was paid by or for you

You may apply for this credit on TurboTax Online. To do so, sign into to TurboTax Online, choose your tax return for the year, then:

> On the left navigation pane, click Provincial, then Provincial Tax Credit Profile

> You may want to select some of the checkboxes, though they are out of the scope of this post. Click Continue until you get to the "You may qualify for the 2022 Ontario Trillium Benefit" Page.

> It will ask for your eligibility, you can choose yes and report figures like the property tax paid and/or accommodation in a public long-term care home.

Make sure to hit Continue so that your information is saved.
