You state that the pension shows on line 5a of the tax return and then ask why it isn't showing. Can you clarify your question?

I was on the phone for 45 minutes with a turbo tax specialist and did an amendment with her guidance an d nontaxable income doed not show up on my tax form 1040 for seniors and the income still did not show up on the form   My inuit turbo tax agent suggested I contact the IRS  after a few tries and lot s of time on the phone I did not get through.  So I have not mailed the returns in yet.

You mean that the nontaxable pension is supposed to show up in line 5a (1040), but not in line 5b(1040), right?

The instructions for lines 4 and 5 on the 1040 are quite odd, but there are many situations in which the IRS doesn't want you to fill in line 4a or 5a. Yes, this means that your nontaxable distributions may not print, but that is absolutely OK.

As Bill stated, there are instances when it should not be on your Form 1040.   If you entered it in TurboTax, rest assured, TurboTax followed the IRS instructions for Form 1040 for your distribution.

Don’t include the following payments on lines 5a and 5b. Instead, report them on line 1h:

  • Disability pensions received before you reach the minimum retirement age set by your employer.
  • Corrective distributions (including any earnings) of excess elective deferrals or other excess contributions to retirement plans. The plan must advise you of the year(s) the distributions are includible in income.

I am 69 and have been putting my pension amount in box 5a forever    I will call the IRS next week to make sure I am doing the right thing.

Check line 4a.  It might have shown up there.  And even if it's not on your return, if it's not taxable it won't  change your return if you amend.  So you don't need to amend for that.

Do you have any other 1099R that show up right on lines 5 or 4?

Oh and we never asked you what code is in box 7 on your 1099R?  And why isn't it taxable?  Is it non taxable for both federal and state?

Have you filed it  yet?   Did you import your 1099R or enter it by hand?  If you haven't filed yet then delete the 1099R and enter it again manually, even if you did enter it yourself.   That usually clears something out and fixes it.

Also, Try rebooting your computer or device. Clear your cache and history. Use a different browser.

We haven't yet heard what form was provided by the pension plan and, if it was Form 1099-R, what code is present in box 7, whether the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box is marked.  Also, what circumstances make this pension nontaxable?

Note that if all amounts present on line 5 are being treated as fully taxable, line 5a will be blank and line 5b will show the full amount.
