How can I enter RRSP contributions from the previous tax year that I did not use at the time?

Your unused RRSP contribution amount from previous years will be on your RRSP Deduction Limit Statement, found on your latest Notice of Assessment. When you use CRA’s Auto-Fill My Return, TurboTax automatically downloads the contribution amount (if applicable) into your tax return for you.

Note: Unused contributions are different from unused contribution room, which is the amount you're entitled to contribute and deduct, minus the amount that you actually deduct.

Select the applicable option below for instructions on how to claim unused RRSP contributions made in previous years.

Instructions for TurboTax Online

  1. Select Find (or the magnifying glass icon) from the menu
  2. In the Find window, type RRSP profile. Select it from the list and then select Go
  3. Select the checkbox for Have unused RRSP/PRPP contributions from prior years and Made RRSP/SPP contributions you wish to carry forward and deduct in a future year, and then select Continue
  4. Select Continue until you reach the Unused RRSP/PRPP Contributions step
    • If there's an amount displayed and the amount is correct, answer No to the question Do you want to change this amount?, and then select Continue
    • If the amount isn't correct, answer Yes to the question Do you want to change this amount?, and enter your amount before selecting Continue
  5. On the RRSP Contribution Summary step, select Done With RRSPs
  6. On the RRSP/PRPP and SPP Carry Forward step, TurboTax shows you the total value of available contributions and your deduction limit. To deduct from available contributions, enter the amount you’d like to deduct and then select Continue

Thank you for the very thorough reply - I suspected but was not confident enough to go ahead and make changes when unsure!
