I am self employed and needed to have a Private Investigator licence. I am an Alberta resident but the course and licence are in BC. Can I claim the course and licence?

We're glad to guide you there. Yes, you can deduct the training (course) as Employment Expense and annual license fees in Line 8760. However, the course is to maintain, upgrade the employment status, plus, directly related to the employment purpose.

Courses taken for personal interest or reasons and with the lasting benefits aren't deductible as Employment Expenses (For example, training was taken in order to get graduated for a degree/ diploma, etc.).

For further guidance, here are the CRA guidelines for Business Licenses, Business Licenses, and Memberships.

and for here's the Canada.ca link for Training Costs: https://bit.ly/2PdXJoq.
