TurboTax Application Settings

I installed TurboTax 2023 Desktop version from the download file.

When I entered the license code, upon restart an error message appeared that stated "TurboTax application settings were not created properly during the installation."

It then instructed me to run TurboTax in Administrator mode.

In many years of using TurboTax and its predecessors, I have never encountered this message, or any error at all.

I am always suspicious when a program wants administrative privileges.

Is this normal and has anyone encountered this?

Thanks

Different computers have different configurations and settings, so, some users may need to run the software in Administrator mode.

To run TurboTax Desktop in Administrator mode, just right click on the icon & select Run as administrator.

I clicked right on the TurboTax Icon, selected Run as Admin.   The application opened to the page where I can choose to copy from last year or start a new return.  But there is no User Account Control Box icon.  Help!

@Meambrsa Could you please clarify what do you mean by 'User Account Control Box" ? If you are looking for a navigation bar it's on the left hand side and at the top panel in a Desktop version.

This is unacceptable.  Turbotax requires me to run it in administrator mode.  You NEED to fix this bug.  No user should accept this level of intrusion by Turbotax.  This opens up every single user who needs to do this to potential malicious software.  FIX THIS ASAP.

@pluscher If you can only run TurboTax in Administrator Mode, then there is something on your computer that is preventing it from running normally. It might be anti-malware or other security software, or it may be the way your user account or your drive permissions are configured.

I'm sorry, that's pure bunk.  There isn't a single program on my computer (and I have hundreds) that have this requirement.  This is clearly TurboTax requiring access that it is NOT entitled to or does NOT require.  I'm not the first to have this problem.  Please run it by technical staff and don't try to blame the customer.

Thank you for your feedback. The only time we would see "Run as Administrator is if you aren't signed in as administrator on your computer. I will bring this forward to our team to verify.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

I'm still seeing Turbotax request Admin privileges, which should never happen after the first installation, and I'm still waiting 34 days now for this issue to be brought "forward to our team to verify."

I find the Turbotax staff postings lacking in technical background.  Uninformed speculation is not helpful.  Please share this thread with a programmer and get this Turbotax bug addressed.

@TurboTaxSusan
Honestly, what kind of answer is this?  You want us, individually, to contact your phone support?
What will they, realistically, be able to do about this programming bug?
I'm sorry but your punt of this issue qualifies as "seat warmer" and "shut the customer up" support.

What happened to turboTax?  If your programmers can't fix this egregious bug, how can I possibly trust that it will correctly and accurately calculate my taxes?

Please reconsider your answer and escalate this issue to someone who can do something about it!

@pluscher

This is not an issue that's happening with all users, and there have been multiple updates with the software since you started posting that had bug fixes. So even if there is an issue in the software, there's something about your computer setup that's triggering the issue.

Phone support can go through troubleshooting steps with you, including viewing your screen. If a ticket is needed, they can get any information needed for the ticket from you as well as list all the steps that were tried.

>> This is not an issue that's happening with all users,

Look, it's not whether or not the issue happens with "all users".  Either TurboTax requires admin privileges to install &/or run or it doesn't.  Your programmers even put in a special note to tell users to run in admin mode if they have problems installing.   Please determine WHY admin is required, and remove this requirement.

I don't have a problem NOW.  I was reporting a problem so that you can improve your software.  I have nothing to bring to your support hotline but you do have a solid issue to bring to your developers.

>> and there have been multiple updates with the software since you started

>> posting that had bug fixes

So, did one of the fixes target this problem??  Why is this so difficult to get a real answer?
Anyway, stop replying to me; I don't care (right now).  Feed this back to your developers so that they ensure this is not an issue for FY2025 tax program installation.  (note: since I've run into this problem 2 years in a row, I'm guessing TurboTax has no intention of fixing it... so please expect me to re-raise this topic again for FY2025).
