@TurboTaxGinette With all due respect, your stock reply is disappointing, as it does not address the specific issue here. As you can see by the date of this thread, this problem has been unresolved for two years now. If Intuit has no intention of fixing an ongoing bug with its software, it should be honest enough to say so. Marking this question as "Solved" is downright dishonest.

If you get the "checking for updates" pop-up after clicking the X or the "Later" button, the problem is probably not with the broken Register pop-up but the update function, as it kicks in only after the Register box has been successfully dismissed. If 'support' has not yet resolved your issue, you could try starting TurboTax while offline, which should give you an "unable to check for updates" message instead.

The Registration pop-up is buggy again this year. If clicking the Later button doesn't dismiss it, try the X in the upper right corner. If that still freezes TurboTax, contact customer support: https://turbotax.community.intuit.ca/community/product-information/help/contact-us/00/873707 Not that there is no difference between the download and CD installations of the desktop software. Both install on your computer, and both should carry forward returns completed on the previous year's TurboTax for desktops. TurboTax Online is a different product altogether - you fill your returns online, with no software installed on your computer. TT Online does not support carry forward or importing of desktop TurboTax files.

You do not have to register for updates. TurboTax checks for updates automatically every time it starts, whether you have registered it or not. Registration is completely optional: https://turbotax.community.intuit.ca/community/product-information/help/what-should-i-do-if-i-m-unable-to-register-my-turbotax-cd-download-edition/00/873575 The Registration pop-up did not work properly last year either, but it did not stop the program from working. This year, it seems to freeze TurboTax in its tracks. I get that when I attempt to register, but when I click the Later button, it dismisses the pop-up. If that doesn't work for you, try dismissing it by clicking the X in the upper right corner of the pop-up. @francisrm, I corrected my earlier reply to provide the Canadian refund link. That said, the Windows 7 installation issue has been resolved - I successfully downloaded, installed, and opened TurboTax, and was able to carry forward a 2018 return. Aside from a couple of annoyances, it seems to work fine. You should be able to install from the subscription CD now, but if you do have problems you can use the download version at the link below with the installation key from your CD. @francisrm, have you tried installing on Windows 7? If you are unable to do so, the best steps would probably be: Claim a refund Buy something else According to several articles by Intuit, TurboTax 2019 should install on Windows 7 (even if they don't recommend it), but the experience of a number of users on this forum (including myself) is that it doesn't. So far, there is no acknowledgement from Intuit of this issue, and thus no sign that it will be resolved. I am waiting until next week, at which point if there is no solution from Intuit, I will claim a refund and buy something else. I have already tested a free download from another provider, and while it works fine on Windows 7, the free product does not meet my needs. I have starting looking into a few paid desktop products, all of which include Windows 7 among the supported browsers - with no indication online (in community forums or online reviews) of any significant issues installing on Windows 7.

The problem affects the desktop (CD/download) editions as well, as confirmed by Revenu Quebec. The return can indeed be submitted without the TPF-1.U as long as all of the required keying summaries or the complete return and applicable schedules are sent in, but it means Revenu Quebec has to enter all information manually instead of simply scanning QR codes, which will delay processing considerably. As there are not likely to be any further updates to TT 2018, this is not likely to get fixed; why it wasn't fixed when there were regular updates might be related to Intuit refusing to acknowledge the issue - as they continue to do through phone 'support'.
