NETFILE error code 31 is due to a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) issue affecting all tax software in Canada.

If you get NETFILE error code 31, it means the identification information submitted to the CRA via NETFILE doesn't match what was provided to the CRA by Service Canada. If you can't fix the problem after verifying your ID, you'll need to file a paper return and include all the necessary slips and receipts.

Note: Your account will be locked after five unsuccessful attempts.

Here's how to check for errors:

TurboTax Online

  • From 2025 tax return in the left menu, select Personal info.

  • On the Your personal info summary screen, select Edit next to your name.

  • On the Let’s get the rest of your personal info screen, review your personal info.

  • See the How to resolve section below.

TurboTax Desktop

  • From the left menu, select Introduction.

  • Review the information in that section.

  • See the How to resolve section below.

How to resolve

Compare the identification info in TurboTax with:

  • Your previous-year, successfully filed tax return or

  • Your SIN card or letter issued by Service Canada

If still unsuccessful, please contact CRA at 1-800-959-8281 for assistance.
