Manitoba teachers can claim up to $1,000 in out-of-pocket teaching expenses through a refundable tax credit, resulting in a refund of up to $150. Eligibility for this provincial credit is the same as for the federal Eligible Educator School Supply Tax Credit.

Expenses that have been reimbursed or claimed elsewhere can't be claimed on your return. While you don’t need to submit any receipts, keep them on hand in case the CRA asks for supporting documentation. For more information, see Other Tax Credits - Line 99 at Manitoba tax information.

Who's eligible?

You may be eligible if:

  • You lived in Manitoba at the end of the tax year, and

  • You were a teacher or early childhood educator (ECE) at an elementary school, secondary school, or regulated childcare facility, and

  • You held a valid teaching or ECE certificate, license, permit, or diploma

Which expenses can I claim?

Eligible expenses include:

  • Books, games, and puzzles

  • Containers, such as plastic boxes

  • Educational support software

These expenses must have been bought for you to teach or facilitate student learning and used in the school or facility where you work.

The Manitoba Teaching Expense Tax Credit will automatically be added to your return in TurboTax when you claim the federal School Supply Tax Credit.
