How do I claim the capital cost allowance (CCA) on a zero-emission vehicle in TurboTax?
To claim CCA on a zero-emission vehicle in TurboTax, select your situation and follow the instructions. These steps don't apply to taxis or vehicles for lease or rent.
- Answer all the initial Personal Info and Tax Profile interview questions if you haven't already. This unlocks the Tax Home screen.
- From the Tax Home screen, under Add to your return, enter employment and select Employment Expenses.
- At the Employment Expenses screen, select Yes.
- At the Employment Expense Profile screen, select I received form T2200 and continue.
- If you didn't receive Form T2200 from your employer, you aren't eligible for this claim.
- At the Employment Expense Profile screen, select Motor Vehicle Expenses, then Continue.
- At the Employment Related Driving screen, enter your vehicle, mileage, and expense details.
- Under Enter the details of your vehicle if owned (not leased) and you want to claim Capital Cost Allowance (CCA):
- For Class of vehicle, select 54: 30%.
- For Claim AII/ZEV, select Yes.
- After entering all your info, select Done With Vehicle.
- You’ll arrive at the Motor Vehicle Expenses Summary screen. If you’re claiming less than the maximum CCA, change the CCA For Year amount on the Motor Vehicle Expenses Summary screen.
- Select Done With Vehicles.
- Answer all the initial Personal Info and Tax Profile interview questions if you haven't already. This unlocks the Tax Home screen.
- From the Tax Home screen, under Add to your return, enter self and select Self-Employment Activities.
- At the Your Self-Employment or Business Summary screen, select Enter New Business.
- Continue to answer questions about your self-employment. Continue on past the Next up, claiming your expenses screen to the Select the types of expenses you have screen.
- On the Select the types of expenses you have screen, select Add under Vehicle expenses, then continue.
- At the Here’s your business info screen, under Vehicle expenses, select Start.
- At the Did you use a vehicle for your work? screen, select Yes.
- At the Vehicle expenses summary screen, select Add a new vehicle.
- At the Let's get some info about this vehicle screen, answer the questions about your vehicle until you get to the Let’s calculate your capital cost allowance (CCA) screen. Select Class 54 (30%) then continue.
- Continue to answer questions about your vehicle until the Vehicle Expenses Summary screen. If you’re claiming less than the maximum CCA, change the number under CCA For Year.
- Select Done.
- Answer all the initial interview questions if you haven't already.
- Select Find, search for and select Employment Expenses, then select Go.
- On the Employment Expenses screen, select Yes.
- On the Employment Expense Profile screen, select Motor Vehicle Expenses, then Continue.
- On the Employment Related Driving screen, enter your vehicle details, and Continue.
- Continue to answer questions about your vehicle until you get to the Capital Cost Allowance (CCA) screen.
- Once all details are entered, select Done.
- Answer all the initial interview questions if you haven't already.
- Select Find, search for Business, select Business profile, then select Go.
- At the Business expert interview screen, select Continue.
- Continue through the screens with questions about your self-employment.
- At the T2125 Vehicle Expenses screen, select Yes.
- At the T2125 Business Related Driving screen, enter your info about the mileage driven, then continue through the screens for expenses.
- At the Fixed Assets screen, select the appropriate box. We’ll follow the path for a ZEV that was purchased in 2024, so we select I purchased equipment, vehicles or buildings.
- Continue to the T2125 - Fixed Assets Purchased (Vehicle) screen:
- For Class #, enter 54.
- Select the ZEV/AII and DIEP checkboxes.
- Enter the vehicle cost.
