How do I enter a T4 and matching relevé slip?

by TurboTax Updated 1 week ago

If you’re using TurboTax Online, you can upload a copy of your T4.

Make sure you have a copy of your T4/Relevé slip(s) handy for reference. Once you have your slip(s), follow the instructions provided below to enter this info into TurboTax.

Entering your T4 and RL-1 info into TurboTax Online

  1. From the Tax Home screen, under Add to your return, enter T4 and select T4 - Relevé Employment Income. Find from the TurboTax menu.
  2. On the T4 (Federal) - Employment Income screen, read the scenarios and determine which one applies to you. Then select Enter T4 - Relevé 1.
  3. On the T4 (Federal) - Employment Income screen, enter the info from your T4 slip, then select Save T4 & Skip Relevé 1
  4. On the T4 – Relevé 1 Summary screen, select Add T4 – Relevé 1 to enter the second T4 just as you did for the first one. Then select Save T4 and Skip Relevé 1. (The Relevé 1 will be entered separately.)
  5. On the T4 – Relevé 1 Summary screen, select Add T4 – Relevé 1.
  6. On the T4 (Federal) - Employment Income screen, enter only the employer’s name at the top and choose QC for province of employment (Box 10), then select Save T4 & Enter Relevé 1.
  7. On the Relevé 1 (Provincial)- Employment and Other Income screen, enter the info from the actual slip (most likely boxes A and J, or a combination of those boxes).
  • On the T4 (Federal) - Employment Income screen, enter all the info from your T4 slip, then select Save T4 & Enter Relevé 1.
  • On the Relevé 1 (Provincial)- Employment and Other Income screen, some of the amounts on the Relevé 1 will already appear, since they are the same as the amounts on your T4. Review the amounts in each box and change them if needed, to match the Relevé from your employer.
  • Select Save and Continue, or if you want to enter another T4 – Relevé 1, select Save and Add Another T4 – Relevé 1.

Often this happens when you are working in a province other than Québec, but your employer also has offices in Québec and you are getting a Relevé 1 for a private medical plan that is being paid for by your employer.

  • On the T4 (Federal) - Employment Income screen, enter all the info from your T4 slip, then select Save T4 & Skip Relevé 1. (The Relevé 1 will be entered separately.)
  • On the T4 – Relevé 1 Summary screen, select Add T4 – Relevé 1.
  • On the T4 (Federal) - Employment Income screen, enter only the employer’s name at the top and choose QC for province of employment (Box 10). Then select Save T4 & Enter Relevé 1.
  • On the Relevé 1 (Provincial)- Employment and Other Income screen, enter the Relevé 1 info from the actual slip (probably box A or J, or a combination of those boxes. (Beforehand, you should only see the Employer’s name at the top.)
  • Select Save and Continue.

This is usually because you were under a different Employment Insurance rate during the year. In this situation:

  • Sum up the amounts on the two T4s
  • Then using the summed amounts, follow the steps under this previous section: I have a T4 and a Releve 1 from the same employer, and my employer is established in Quebec.

This situation often occurs when:

  • You work in a province other than Québec
  • Your employer also has offices in Québec
  • You are getting a Relevé 1 for a private medical plan that is being paid by your employer
