The reason is based on your situation to calculate your eligible tax credit. There are 2 cases:

1) As you already claim an Eligible Dependant Amount for your old child who is infirm on your tax return.

->The maximum is 15,502.00  in this case. As per CRA, the Caregiver Tax Credit is considered as an Additional Amount.

2) If you do not claim Eligible Dependant Amount on your tax return

-> Log in to TurboTax online -> Under Canada Caregiver Amount profile:

  • Did the dependant live with you in 2020? -> Yes
  • Was the dependant mentally or physically infirm? -> Yes
  • Is the dependant on you because of physical or mental impairment? -> Yes
  • Do you have a signed statement from a medical doctor? -> Yes
