Can I claim a child who turned 18 during the 2021 tax year?

You may be able to claim your child if you are claiming credits or deductions related to them, such as a tuition transfer or medical expenditures you paid for them, you can claim them as a dependent if as seen in our TurboTax article Claiming the Amount for an Eligible Dependant Credit the eligibility criteria are met. If your dependent owes taxes or wants to apply for credits or deductions, they may need to file a return. If they wanted to transfer tuition to you, for example, they would have to claim it on their tax return first.

More information on who must file a return can be found on this Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) page: Do you have to file a return?
