Do you claim your total medical expenses regardless of having a private insurance?

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

You can claim your medical expenses on your tax return. However by private insurance, if you mean your private LIFE insurance, this is not deductible on your income tax return as an individual, so can only claim your total medical expenses if this is the case. But if by private insurance you mean Private Health Insurance, the premium paid is an eligible medical expense and you can claim them.

In the latter case, you can claim the premium paid for your health insurance and the difference in the amount you paid and the amount you were reimbursed for if any.
