home accessibility expenses.

I am trying to understand home accessibility expenses. Are new driveways and tree removals eligible for home accessibility expenses?  They were done near our front door.

Thank you for your question!

Unfortunately, new driveways and tree removals are under the following list of expenses that are not eligible for the Home accessibility tax credit (HATC):

  • amounts paid to acquire a property that can be used independently of the qualifying renovation
  • the cost of annual, recurring, or routine repair or maintenance
  • amount paid to buy household appliances
  • amount paid to buy electronic home-entertainment devices
  • the cost of housekeeping, security monitoring, gardening, outdoor maintenance, or similar services
  • financing costs for the qualifying renovation
  • the cost of renovation incurred mainly to increase or maintain the value of the dwelling

Furthermore, to qualify for HATC, the purpose of renovations or expenses incurred is to make homes safer or more accessible for Canadians 65-years of age or older, or for disabled people of any age if they are being claimed by the eligible individual or by someone who looks after the individual and meets all of the CRA’s requirements.
