how do we override the charitable donations optimization between spouses, to apply to our own returns?

last year, it applied to my income, which was higher, and now it is still applying to mine, with lower income

If you are using Forms Mode, then override the line "Less: Amount claimed by your spouse or common law partner (if applicable)" on the Charitable Donations worksheet (DON). This override will not affect your ability to NETFILE.
