The personal tax credit can be claimed by any individual who is a resident of Canada for tax purposes and has income from any source, including employment, self-employment, and investments. This includes Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and those on a work or study visa who meet the residency requirements.
To be considered a resident of Canada for tax purposes, an individual must have significant residential ties to the country, such as a home, a spouse or dependents, and social ties. Alternatively, an individual who spends 183 or more days in Canada in a given tax year will also be considered a resident for tax purposes.
