There are two kinds of dependent medical expenses one claim on his/her tax return. One is the 'Medical expense tax credit' and the other one is the 'Medical expense tax credit for other dependents'. The same rules apply to both the categories i.e. eligible expenses, minimum amount for the expenses to be considered and a 12-month period ending in the fiscal year.
Under the 'Medical expense tax credit' (line 33099) category, one can claim medical expenses for oneself, spouse or common-law-partner, dependent children aged 18 years or younger. However, under the 'Medical expense tax credit for other dependents (line 33199)' category, one can claim medical expenses for family members dependent on you financially including children grandchildren who are 19 or older.
