Open TurboTax
I'm trying to file FY2024 taxes using the online version. I've auto-pulled all the information through CRA. BUT, on T5008 Box 14 is not auto filled, and I'm getting an Error as I proceed to file. I've downloaded the T5008 from my trading house.I have a lot of trades and it's becoming very-very cumbersome to fill each item manually, especially when I'm working on two different windows; one for Turbo Tax and the other for the T5008 document from my trading house. Also, the dates for Box 21 are in two different formats. Turbo Tax is asking for dd/mm/yyyy format, while the T5008 is in mm/dd/yy format.
Please help, otherwise I'll be sitting in front of my computer for a long time......
A year has passed and nothing has been done.
As I understand it; CRA is not providing Box 14 data to Turbo Tax Auto-fill software.
Nonetheless, this data is available on T5008 downloaded from the trading houses.
Turbo Tax should provide an option to upload T5008 (Trading Summary).pdf file to their website, and then extract the required information. This should not be a difficult task in 2026 (ChatGPT?)
This is how I got around to it this year, little bit of work, but not too hard at all.
-Download T5008 (PDF) from your trading house.
-Copy all the text using mouse (left click + drag, right click copy.)
-Paste it into a text file (Notepad.)
-Clean up the text file, preserve BUY and SELL rows only and save it.
-Open MS Excel blank sheet. Click in the top left cell.
-Data->From Text/CSV, select and import your text file.
-Delete all the columns, preserving BOX 14, Type, and BOX 21 columns.
-Select all the data cells, click Filter button in the Data tab. (Ctrl+Shift+L will toggle the filters as well.)
-A pull down arrow will appear on top of each column.
-Click on arrow, filter by SELL only. Select and copy these filtered cells and paste in a new sheet.
-Following item is golden.
-Select the date column and change the date format from mm/dd/yyyy to dd/mm/yyyy. Format Cells->Number->Date->Type.
-You should have a nice Excel sheet with just the information you need. At this point, even the SELL column can be deleted
-Triple check your Excel sheet with T5008 (PDF) for accuracy.
-Now you can copy/paste the cell contents directly into each of your T5008 'Date of Disposition (dd/mm/yyyy)' Box 14 entries.
Let me know if this worked for you.
BTW: This should not be too hard to implement in year 2025. If you can figure it out, just ask AI and it will actually write the code for you.
It gets worse, I selected to 'Auto-fill your tax info from the CRA into your return.', using the Re-import button; Turbo Tax pulled duplicate entries, increasing my Tax Liability or Balance owing by quite a few thousand dollars. Needless to say, THIS IS BAD, IT NEEDS TO BE FIXED NOW!!!
@harjitsgill We appreciate your feedback and will forward it to the relevant department.
To ensure that all of the information you will submit is accurate and that there are no double entries, we always advise you to check your return before filing.
Wow. This is a very poor reply to a very real problem. I am facing the same problem as above. I can't believe TurboTax has allowed this to happen. The date is meaningless this year since the Capital gains limit of 250K has been revoked. TurboTax should allow us to override the error and submit anyway without dates being filled in. Anything less would make the program more difficult than manual entry on forms. PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP!
BTW, except in Quebec, dates are formatted mm/dd/yyyy, except in TurboTax??? The problem above would have been alleviated if at least they were in the same format as the rest of North America so you could cut and paste from your T5008 Slip. But no! You now have to swap the DD and MM to fit the TurboTax format on every T5008 entry. There is no way to set the Date format as a preference...
Also, the type of income for T5008 entry should default to Capital Gain as opposed to leaving it blank which again forces one to access every form to set the type of income.
Simple fixes that would solve a world of problems.
@ralpha1 Thank you for the feedback. We will pass this on to our development team.
Support is pathetic. I tried calling the support line, it just garbled some gibberish and click, hung up on me. Called again few time, same result.
Like I said, this is a serious issue and the support is pathetic.
I decided to remove all the downloaded T5008s and do a consolidated T5008 with all activities before the Jun 25 date, and a separate one for all the activities after Jun 24. It will take a while to remove all the T5008s but less time than having to enter the dates individually for each form. I happen to have 411 of them!!!
Good Idea. I don't know how to do that. I entered all the dates manually, and filed the return for this year. Perhaps it will get fixed next year.
Good that you managed to do all of that? How long did it take you? How many T5008s did you have?
I had 411! So I deleted them all, one by one. Took me an hour and 40 minutes. The consolidated approach took me 10 minutes to enter once I had all the data in an Excel Spreadsheet. That took me half an hour to do.
