Claiming Ontario Property Tax as tenant

Last year I did not apply to this bc as a tenant, I saw one year I claimed on it and it seems CRA is seeking repayment, so not sure how this should work.

If I am a tenant and not the owner of the property my understanding is that I'm still eligible to claim this putting the amount paid for the year 2025 excluding platform commissions, or taxes, rather only the amount regarding the rent, given the owner would be making the property tax payments.

I also wanted to know municipality or name of landlord can simply be North York, or should it be Toronto.

The house is not social housing, charitable housing, or a student residence its a private property so I'm sure it pays property taxes. I'm confirming with landlord that the house is subject to property taxes, but any assistance would be appreciated.

Filing

As a tenant, you enter the rent that you paid in the provincial section of your return. You do not need to ask your landlord about what he pays, as this doesn't have anything to do with you. The following is the only thing you need to complete as far as claiming the rent you paid. (If you are self-employed and rent a space to work, please let us know and we will give you steps on where to claim that specific rent.)

Once you click continue, you will get to this page: Put YES if at least one of these applies to you. Answer the second question if you lived in Northern Ontario, and then continue.

These questions and the next will determine if you receive the Trillium Benefit and the GST depending on your household income.

Here, as you see, you will click on the drop-down arrow and choose RENT. Fill out this form, and you can put the name of your landlord.

We hope this helps.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

Filing

Thanks however I never said I wanted to know how much property tax they pay only that the house I'm a tenant of is subject to property tax.

However I think I had issues in previous years to the point where I did not include this in my tax return of 2024, so I'm confused.

As a tenant I simply say yes and input the yearly amount paid to the landlord and then I can put municipality there also instead of land lord name, please clarify.

Filing

Yes, you will say "yes" and input the rent you pay for the full year- under municipality or landlord name- If you are renting usually you'd enter the landlords name- if you owned your home and paid taxes then you'd put the municipality.

Filing

Thanks I finally filed my taxes and they were accepted, just need to wait for the NOA to appear.

CRA said they will review my application for property tax and energy and will let me know if i'm eligible, its a big miss I did not enter this last year, but was afraid CRA would clawback.
