Dual Status Tax filing
Hi,
Hi! I was in Canada & tax resident of Canada for the first 5 months of the past year, then in the US on a visitor Visa for the next 3 months, and on a TN visa and in the U.S. for the remainder of the year until now.
I merged & closed quite a few accounts, including TFSAs, before getting my TN visa, and I intend to file a dual-status return to avoid complications regarding reporting these accounts from prior to obtaining a TN to IRS. My understanding is that I will have to file as a Canadian resident for the first 11 months or so of the year up to the date that I meet the presence test in the US and file as a US resident for the remainder of the year.
My questions are: first, is my understanding correct, and second, which parts of these filings can be done with Turbotax software on both the Canadian & American sides?
Thank you!
