Troubleshooting

Hello, I just wanted to follow up and thank you all for the information Assist. This is greatly appreciated because this was causing me a lot of stress. I just don't like having to explain to CRA after the fact that the number don't match and here's why.

As everyone is aware and several on this forum has pointed out it shouldn't be up to us to find workarounds to get errors cleared unless of course we are getting paid 😃.  The whole problem stems from the changes coming to how the capital gain is calculated depending on how much capital gains are to be declared and when.

According to the individual I spoke with from CRA and also pointed out in this feed. Box 21 of the T3 is mearly a confirmation place holder for box 52 and/or box 53, so long as either one or a combination of both adds up to box 21. Although there is no box 52 or 53 on the paper copy of the T3, Turbotax requires this field when submitting your return due to the new capital gain calculation requirements.

Therefore, as indicated in this feed you could place 1 million dollar in box 21 & leave 52 and 53 empty. This in no way affect the calculated totals to this point. The actual calculation is conducted when you enter the values in box 52 and/or 53 that adds up to equal box 21. The comparison is done at this point and will allow you to proceed and clear the error preventing you from filing your tax return through the CRA portal.

Once the total or totals for box 52 and/or 53 equals box 21 then the capital gain is then calculated.

Hopefully in the future the paper copy of our T3 will contain a box 52 and 53.

  • Thank you all again for you assistance this has made a difficult situation less so.
