Troubleshooting
Update - 31-march - this Turbo tax issue has been preventing me from submitting a return in which I would be getting a significant refund. In addition to refunding the cost of the software Turbo tax should also be responding for positive or negative interest charges if the issues are not resolved by tax filing dates.
Personal use case tied to this error.
Turbo Tax standard - have used it for multiple years and the following scenario has existed for multiple years without errors
One T3 record Box 21 shows value A
- 60% / 40% split with spouse
- Other boxes
- Box 52 shows B
- Box 53 shows C
- Grand total matches to two decimal points value A
According to the CRA Error definition
- If you have capital gains reporting on line 17600 (Schedule 3 - need to look a forms view) then a corresponding entry is required on line 68140 in Chart A on Form T936 - that amount in line 68140 cannot be less than line 17600
Form Schedule 3
- line 17599 (shows info from box 52) shows B
- Line 17600 (shows box 53) shows value C
- Line 19900 = D (50% of value A from box 21 on T3)
Form T936
- Line 68140 = per spousal split (60% * box 21) -= Value E
- The 60% split is triggering the the error when netfiling as the value in 68140 is less than the total of box 21 on all T3
- Form T936 does not appear to reflect the split across two integrated returns
While I have seen the suggestions to override the detailed forms, or 'fake' additional T3's to trick turbo tax into working properly I think the risk is that you will trigger future CRA issues/audits/questions downstream.
Note in 2023, while there was a different %split the values in 17600 match the value in 68140
