Can I claim family caregiving as a disability support payment

No, you may not as they are two different credits. As of 2017, Family Caregiving Amount has been consolidated to Canada Caregiver Credit, along with Infirm Dependent Credit and the Caregiver Credit.

The amount you have for the Family Caregiving will be claimed under Canada Caregiver Credit (CCC). CCC is available for individuals who supports a spouse or common-law partner, or a dependent with a physical or mental impairment

The amount you can claim depends on your relationship to the person for whom you are claiming the CCC, your circumstances, the person’s net income, and whether other credits are being claimed for that person.  The amounts also change every year. You can check schedule 5 for the required information and calculations.

For more information on Canada Caregiver Credit, please see:

On the other hand, the Disability Supports Deduction can only be claimed by the individual with the disability to deduct certain medical expenses they paid in the year so they could:

  • Work as an employee or be self-employed;
  • Attend a designated educational institution, or;
  • Carry on research in respect of which they have received a grant.
