I upgraded my free 2016 turbo tax to the standard package, why cant I do my 2017 taxes the same way without paying again?

Each year of TurboTax is considered a separate product. Additionally, in TurboTax Online you pay per return, so even if you could use the 2016 version for 2017, you would still have to pay for an additional return.
