Interprovincial relocation

Hello - My husband and I started our relocation from Alberta to Ontario in 2024. Specifically, my husband ended his employment in Alberta in August 2024 and started a new job in Ontario in September 2024, which resulted in him relocating to Ontario earlier than me (to a new Ontario employer and a temporary Ontario house). As we were still waiting to sell our house in Alberta, I did not relocate until the house sold in March 2025. As such, my husband officially relocated 6 months earlier than me. When claiming moving expenses, can my husband claim his moving related expenses in the 2024 tax year, and can I claim the remaining moving expenses in the 2025 tax year? The majority of the moving expenses will be in the 2025 tax year, because that is when we officially sold our house, transported all of our belongings/vehicle, cancelled all of our services, etc. Thank you!

Yes, your husband can claim any eligible moving expenses that occur in tax year 2024. For more information, please refer to this CRA link: Moving expenses: Eligible moving expenses
