Having a baby in 2017, do i need to do anything on my 2016 tax return?

Been living with my partner since Sept 2016, will leaving my marital status as Single for 2016 affect any child tax credits for 2017 (will change status for 2017 tax return for sure)

You are correct for 2016 as in 2016 as 1 year has not elapsed and the baby was not born yet.  Next year, you should change your status to common law and if the baby is born you should apply for the Canada Child Benefit.  It will not affect your child tax credits as long as you inform CRA of any changes in your marital status.
