I have been using TurboTax for years now and this year's version is not the same and frankly, terrible. I've gone throught the app 4 times now, using both the CRA automatic info download and manually entering income info. After downloading my income info from CRA, I clicked on the part to get my spouse's downloaded from the CRA but nothing happens and the instruction next to it says to log in with my name and then log out, which I did and again nothing happened. I tried clicking it again and tried my spouse's name and I get into CRA under her ID but nothing happens. Tried the option of doing everything manually and after entering all the income info for myself, it does not give any option to manually enter my spouse's income but instead, moves on to donations and medical expenses. A this point my spouse's total income showing is just the sum from the 50% income from shared T3, T5 and T5008. I go right to the end and it never comes up with anything else about entering my spouses income from T4RIF's OAS, etc. It says it's ready to file without any of my spouse's own pension income included. If I am missing something, this year's app DEFINITELY does not show an easy way to enter her info, either through CRA or manually. Previous versions were incredible straight forward.... this year's version is junk.
We understand that navigating this new version of TurboTax Online can be confusing.
If you're a long-time Online user, you'll have noticed that the look and navigation have changed. Instead of the long menu on the left, all the sections relating to your return are grouped together in one section: 2024 Tax return.
To enter a spouse's information on a joint return, when you're finished entering your information, from the 2024 Tax return section (on the left menu), click on the spouse's name (in the top band) and you'll be able to enter all the information for that spouse.
We invite you to visit this FAQ article: In TurboTax Online, how do I quickly jump to different sections of my tax return?
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
I did find out when I saw a post about the new version now "toggling" between spouses. Unfortunately, the message right in the middle of the page after my CRA info was downloaded was a little confusing because it implied that to download my spouse's CRA, click on the link that was showing, which is somewhat similar to what previous versions had. It really should bring up a box saying "Now go to the top and toggle to your spouse's name and download his/her income information from the CRA next" then "Toggle back and forth to complete each return, or continue with your own form and input the remaining info for both of you". While going through my form, I did not see anything "pop up" in front of my eyes that indicated that I should toggle to my spouse's name at any point, which frankly is a flaw in this new version. After my income was all in, it just moved on to entering both of our donations and medical expenses and moved on to completing both forms without my spouse's income included.
Perhaps forward the underlined lines above to your developers because at some point, the app should be very explicit about using the toggle feature. Nowhere does the flow of steps indicate that I should toggle to my spouse at any point. Before starting my income input, a big box should come up to advise you so use the toggle going forward, perhaps with a graphic with arrows pointing to the two names at the top of the page. As in previous versions, the step of downloading my spouse's CRA info was somewhat automatic. This version is more manual as you have to now toggle but the apps's flow doesn't tell you when you need to toggle.
