How do I get a foreign slip?

To claim foreign income on your Canadian tax return, you will need to obtain a foreign slip from the country where you earned the income. If you earned income in the U.S, you will need to obtain a U.S. tax slip such as a W-2, 1042-S, or 1099.

To check which U.S Tax form is required, please visit TurboTax FAQs page: Common USA Tax Forms Explained & How to enter them on your Canadian Tax Return

Here's how you can get a foreign slip:

  1. Contact the issuer: The issuer of the foreign slip (in this case, the U.S. Tax authority) should be able to provide you with a copy of the required tax slip.

  2. Request online: You may be able to request a copy of your U.S. Tax slips online through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) website. To contact Internal Revenue Service (IRS), please visit this link: Let Us Help You

  3. Contact your employer: If you earned income through an employer in the U.S., they should be able to provide you with a copy of your W-2.
