Turb Tax Premier does not let me proceed with Rental Income. Wants me to upgrade to Self-employed. But Premier does allow rental income as advertised.

I went and bought the desktop version, not paying for 'Self-employed' online. Just a money grab....

Turb Tax Premier does not let me proceed with Rental Income. Wants me to upgrade to Self-employed. But Premier does allow rental income as advertised.

What version of TurboTax Desktop/Download are you using? We only suggested Online as your file indicates you used to use Online.

Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

I encountered the same issue when attempting to add rental income. It's clearly stated on the TurboTax Canada website that rental income is included in the Premier version. However, I was prompted to upgrade to the Self-Employed version in order to proceed with reporting rental income.

I've been using TurboTax online to file my taxes for several years, and this is the first time I've needed to report rental income. I'm really disappointed with this experience.

Have you completed your return as of yet?

If you've entered an amount from any of the boxes on the slips listed here, you have what the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) considers to be self-employment or business income:

T4A slip: box 20 or 48
T4A slip: box 28 and you selected Yes to the question Does the income declared in Box 028 consist of fees collected for services you provided? in TurboTax Online (needs to say NO to indicate no self-employment)

If you have an amount in any of these boxes, TurboTax will ask additional questions to report the income as self-employment/business income.

When entering the amount on box 28 for the T4A, there are two (2) Box 28s. It can accidentally be entered into the wrong Box 28. This entry error triggers the warning that states there is self-employment income. Once the value is entered into the other Box 28, the warning during the review is removed.

I have the same issues too!

It seems like this year the Turbox Tax moves rental property income to "self-employed"

I won't be able to file if I don't upgrade to self-employed! :(

Since the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has now added rental property income and expenses as being self-employed, TurboTax made the changes to our software.

I am not self employed, I have no rental income and, yet, your program locked up, won't even let me go to forms anymore. It wants me to buy the self-employed version or quit entirely. What is this major nonsense?????

You post a number to call for customer support, that means a person. There's no one there, there's no support. There's a robot that takes you around in a loop. Most frustrating. Never would've bought your product if I had known.

TurboTax Online and CD/download customers can call customer support at [phone number removed].

During tax season (February 20 to May 1), we're available 7 days a week during these hours:

  • 9 AM to midnight ET for English support
