I paid rent for my son while he was attending university in ON. The receipts are in my name. Can I claim the rent? He has no income. Also I was a BC resident on Dec 31.

You are unable to claim the rent payments on your own tax return as you were a BC Resident. But your son may qualify for the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit (OEPTC) portion of the Trillium Benefit and could claim the rent payments that were "paid for him".

You may be eligible if you lived in Ontario on December 31, 2018, and at least one of the following applies:

  • rent or property tax for your principal residence in Ontario was paid by or for you for 2018.

Further information on the Trillum Benefit can be found here: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/child-family-benefits/provincial-territorial-progra...
