Open TurboTax
This year, as in many previous years, I plan to file a join return with my wife. I am self-employed and will select that option for TurboTax software. My son, now 17 years old, filed his tax return last year on paper. This year, I'm wondering if I can add my son to my account as a family member and use TurboTax to file his return online. If so, how would I do that? Does he need his own account/sign in or can I use my existing account/sign-in? Thanks.
You can use the same account to prepare and file your son's return, but you can also choose a different version of TurboTax Do-It-Yourself to file his return in the same account.
I also suggest making a new account for him and filing his returns there. This way, if you ever want to file his return separately, you won't be able to import information from a previous year because you used a different account. By giving him his own sign-in now, he will have a clean, continuous tax history that he can take over when he is ready to file his own taxes.
Thank you for choosing TurboTax.
Thanks very much for your quick reply. The information was exactly what I was looking for.
You're welcome! Glad to help!
