Claiming Expenses

When entering expenses, do I calculate the percentage or does Turbotax? For example say I spent $100 on meals and entertainment. I know you can claim 50%. Do I enter $100 or $50? Do I do the math or does Turbotax? I’m worried both I do the math and Turbotax so it’s being done twice and I get credit for $25? I always do the calculations myself and enter the lower amount not the full amount.

Claiming Expenses

When entering your meals business expense, enter the full amount and TurboTax will apply the appropriate inclusion rate automatically, based on whether you enter the amount for normal meals expense or the amount for long-haul truck drivers.

If you are using the EasyStep Interview on either TurboTax Online or the installed product, TurboTax CD/Download, the interview will provide you with both input fields.

If you are using the Forms Mode in TurboTax CD/Download, enter the full amount in the input field for the applicable Meals and Entertainment (line 8523) line (normal or long-haul).

Thank you for choosing TurboTax!
