northern residents deduction - trips. What to enter on columns: travel expenses, lowest return airfare, employment benefit, standard amount

The travel expense deduction includes the option to claim a standard amount of up to $1,200 in eligible travel expenses for those without employer-provided travel benefits.

If there's an eligible family member who travelled, they may need to be considered in determining the travel expense deduction.

The lowest airfare is what the price of light was at the time of travel and not necessarily what you paid. You can find it by clicking this link: Lowest Airfare

Taxable travel employment benefits include any of the following that were received from an unrelated employer who's not a relative and are included in income from employment in the prescribed zone:

  • Travel assistance, such as airline tickets or a trip on a corporate airplane
  • A travel allowance or a lump-sum payment

Usually the employer includes this in box 32 or 33 of the T4 slip or in box 28 or 116 of the T4A slip.

The standard amount is $1200.
