Can both parents claim tuition fees for both children?

Can both parents claim tuition fees for both children?

Yes, both parents can claim tuition transfers, but with a major catch: one child's tuition cannot be split between two parents. Each parent can claim a tuition fee from a different child. Unused tuition can only be transferred to one designated recipient by a student. They are unable to divide their $5,000 transfer limit between their parents from one child (Student).

Before transferring anything, the student must use their tuition to pay off all of their taxes. A parent may only receive the "leftover" sum, which is limited to $5,000 per student.

How do I enter tuition transferred from my spouse/partner or child?

According to CRA, "Only one person can claim this transfer from the student. It does not need to be the same person from year to year.

The student cannot transfer any amount they carried forward in a previous year. The maximum amount they are allowed to transfer is $5,000 less the amount they need to use to reduce their own tax owing."
