I haven’t personally contributed as far as I know so how or can I withdraw

If you have never contributed to RRSP or to a TFSA then  you wouldn't be able to withdraw from it unless you have unused RRSPs or an amount in your TFSA.

As per the CRA: Withdraw unused contributions.
