If a student is working while going to school are they required to claim thier tuition or is it optional, it reduces the return to claim it

You are not required but it would be beneficial to lower the taxes you pay on your income and also to be carried forward to the next year to lower your higher income tax if needed. Also note that as a full-time student you will not be eligible to claim the  Canada Workers Benefit which you should remove from your return.
