On the Northern travel deduction is it ok to fill in an amount lesser than your lesser amount column just to have the simplified total of 1200?

We wouldn't recommend it, but if you have the receipts should the Canada Revenue Agency require them, claiming a lesser amount towards a credit will only lower your return.
